Astroecology refers an environment found in space, not within earth (as in Markul’s crystal caves). A hypothetical ecology is the starting point for “when the actual world grows heavy”: astroecology as any imagined, memorized, and synthetic environment, changing along with our perception of it. Helden employs a free-associative narrative structure, including poetic instructions such as “Ask: Gravity, radiation, making it visible.” Its full-color images are numbered, followed closely by footnotes. Each page has the effect of crawling deeper into a cave. Part photographic document, part ecological text, part fiction, part poetry; in inviting readers to interact with and explore this world, Helden intends to make them co-creators.
